Tracking Down Those Organic Farmers: We Need Your Help!
The mission of the Iowa Organic Association is: To advance organic opportunities by fostering education, research, promotion and market development and policy. In conjunction with the Leopold Center and the ISU Organic Program, we are working to determine the number of organic and transitioning farmers in the state of Iowa. We need your assistance in gathering this very important data for accurate numbers of those farms that fit these criteria.
We've discussed this project with Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey. He agreed that gathering this number will be very helpful in developing a forum and framework to identify the needs and concerns of organics in Iowa. Although the USDA gathers numbers on organic acres, they do not include farms in transition and farms that are not certified but farm organically. Our goal is to gather more "ground truth" numbers.
Your assistance is vital to the success of our endeavor. If you are or know of someone who fits this description please call our office or send an email. We are happy to visit with you about this project and its importance for gathering support for Organic Agriculture in Iowa. Numbers talk! We plan to publish a report on our findings later this year and will send you a copy.
We appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to help us in this endeavor. Thank you in advance for your assistance!
